Step Two: How much of your life are you willing to change to make a difference?
|
Think about what you want
There are a number of things to ask yourself when you're considering helping animals, such as:
-
How much time am I willing to give, for example, weekly, monthly, annually, for three or four months at a time?
-
Do I want to help animals in the area I live in where I will probably have more of a hands-on approach? Or do I want to reach out to those who definitely do not live near here, such as the polar bear? (Assuming you live in the north of England, where there are no polar bears.) Or do I want to help both? |
- Is there any particular area of the animal-human bond I want to get involved with, such as volunteering to walk dogs for the elderly or terminally ill who may otherwise have to go into hospital? Are there any issues I want to campaign for, such as the elderly being able to take their pets into residential homes with them? Or am I just happy to help out and lend a paw? Have I seen something I want to do something about, such as homeless animals on the street?
-
What's in it for me? Sometimes, things happen in life and we need something to take ourselves out of our current situation. For example, someone who has suffered a bereavement may find it very comforting to get involved with dog walking for a local charity.
-
Dogs are non-judgemental and give people space to think, be, reflect and cry, whereas well meaning friends and relatives may not allow such room. Perhaps you want to boost your social life or have something more meaningful to do outside of work, or you simply just want to fulfil a need and desire to help animals. |
