Resolving Conflict

There are many organisations working to support and help both people and animals.

This is in part because so many people in the world are dependent on animals for their livelihood.  When those animals are sick, the people cannot earn a living.

But it’s also because people and animals are fighting for space and solutions need to be put in place to help them live side by side.

An excellent example of work being undertaken to tackle this battle for resource is the work that the US based Elephant Care International is doing in Sri Lanka.

Elephants matter because their habitat is home to hundreds of animals and plants as well.  If we can tackle the elephant’s problems – of which reduced living habitation and thus a reduced food supply is one - many other animals will be helped at the same time.

Elephants and people are killing each other over a desperate battle for resources.  Elephant Care International supports projects which addresses the resource needs of both animals and elephants, thus creating win-win situations.  For example, it helps create alternative income streams for people in villages which enable the elephants’ natural habitat to be protected and preserved.

The organisation is working with the Sri Lankan Wildlife Conservation Society to help five villages situated in an important elephant corridor.  Rampaging elephants have caused loss of human life, crops and livelihoods.  The villages have, of course, struck back, resulting in elephant life.

The project provides alternative crops and also another source of income.  These efforts will help encourage the villages to take a more tolerant view of the elephants. It will enable them to reduce the crops lost to these beautiful creatures and mean that they will have more of an opportunity – thanks to an increased income and food source – to care for them.  People and animals can help each other.

Can You Help??

You can help this cause – or your company can – by:
  • adopting a village in which Elephant Care International is doing this work.  The elephant is such a large animal that preserving it will help all the smaller animals who live in the same region.  This means that, by adopting a village, you can help animals, people and the environment all at once.
  • set up a Just Giving page and start a campaign to encourage friends, colleagues and family friends to donate money to help Elephant Care International continue this vital work.
  • finding out about the other projects Elephant Care International are involved with e.g. developing a long term contraceptive for those in Africa, to deal with an over-population of elephants to reduce culling pressure, and assisting in the health assessment of 800 captive elephants in India.
  • donating spare air miles to Elephant Care International? The staff have to travel many thousands of miles to do their work every year, and every mile and penny counts
