Boost your activity levels

If you want to improve your own fitness levels and wellbeing, you can include certain sorts of activity which will help you increase the amount of bending, stretching, gentle lifting, walking, strolling, sweeping and general moving around that you do.

In short, helping animals and charities can become part of your exercise programme for the week - and it won't even seem like exercise (and thus hard work!).

Boost your own wellbeing and activity levels (we won't call it exercise, sounds too much like hard work) by helping animals.

Helping Charities and Animals Hands-On
  • Gardening for a charity or at home
  • Creating a wildlife haven in your own garden
  • Maintenance, DIY
  • Dog walking
  • Driving
  • Filling water buckets, haynets
  • Sweeping to keep things looking good for visitors
  • Cuddling, stroking
  • Mucking out
  • Grooming
  • Distributing and collecting money boxes on foot
  • Clearing litter from the countryside or seaside
  • Standing and shaking a tin
  • Baking cakes for a cake stall without an electric mixer
  • Going to visit suitable homes for a new pet
  • Riding horses (experienced riders)
  • Giving a pet who needs exercise a home
  • Stuffing things into envelopes instead of chocolates into your mouth!
  • Making teas and coffees (think of all that lifting)
  • Creating paths for walkies
  • Taking kids on a nature walk to teach them about the countryside
  • Helping an elderly or terminally ill person with their pet care
  • Take pets to the vet for people who cannot get there themsevles e.g. the elderly or sick, or those going through a hard time
  • Becoming a puppy parent for an assistant dog charity
  • Leave the car at home and walk to save the environment.
  • Attend events and get a good walk in as you make your way around the stands

Raising Money

Do a sponsored event:
  • Slim (put a limit on this so that you do it sensibly)
  • Give Up e.g. booze, chocolate, crips, fizzy drinks, smoking...the money you would have spent on your forbidden item goes into a collecting box
  • Walk - even just a mile to get you started.  Build up gradually!
  • Run
  • Swim
  • Ride on horseback or cycling
  • Swim in the sea on Christmas Day/New Year's Day
  • Charity Challenge, e.g. skydiving, abseiling, walk along China's Great Wall
Or leave the car at home and ignore public transport and walk, putting the money you save on petrol (or public transport) into a pot for a given charity.

Work possibles
  • Charity challenge, e.g. get the team abseiling
  • Do a physical task for a day for an animal charity or conservation group
  • Get involved in Take Your Dog to Work Day (an annual event every September) and get a team taking the visiting canines out for walkies at lunch time.
  • Allow dogs into the office full stop!
It is always a good idea to get a check up from your doctor before you begin getting more active, especially if you have any current medical conditions or haven't done any exercise for a long time.

Walking is a very easy way to get moving, as is swimming, so one or other could form part of your new exercise routine and help raise money for your favourite animal charity!
